A slice of history will be made on Sunday as Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC do battle to be crowned Westfield W-League champions. Never before have the championship-winning side come from third or fourth, as is the case this season, adding an extra edge to a match shaping as a classic.

A strong and noisy crowd is anticipated with the two clubs also featuring in the sold-out Hyundai A-League clash 24-hours earlier at the same AAMI Park venue.

Melbourne Victory will be appearing in their maiden Grand Final, while Sydney FC have appeared in two, winning one title, although in truth the Sky Blues have just a handful of survivors from their 2010/11 side when they were beaten by Brisbane Roar.

Melbourne have the edge when it comes to bragging rights this season earning a win - their first ever against the Sky Blues - and a draw in the return match at home.

The Victory enter the decider on the back of a club record seven-match undefeated run, although they needed penalties to edge past Perth Glory in last weekend-s epic semi-final.

Nevertheless, surviving that test in the west was yet another example of the Victory-s resolve and togetherness as a team unit. Their settled starting side, particularly in defence, is another key component in the Victory-s breakthrough success this season.

With the best defensive record in the league during the regular season, Victory fans will be looking for even more from ever-impressive goalkeeper Brianna Davey, along with in-form central defender Maika Ruyter-Hooley and co.

After an erratic campaign Sydney FC seem to be hitting form at the perfect time having been in danger of missing the finals for the first time just a fortnight ago, before eventually finishing fourth. Their 3-2 win over arch-rivals Brisbane Roar further proof, if any were needed, of the team-s potency in attack and all-round x-factor.

They will, however, be forced to make do without suspended striker Emma Kete and utility Ellyse Perry due to cricket commitments, however in the likes of Nicola Bolger and Chloe Logarzo they have a couple of very handy replacements.

Coach Alen Stajcic will no doubt look to his experienced campaigners to lead their way with the side boasting five survivors from the Grand Final defeat two years ago including key defender Renee Rollason, under-rated midfielder Teresa Polias and skipper Kyah Simon.
