Westfield FFA Cup: Sydney FC’s road to the Final
Sydney FC are through to the Westfield FFA Cup Final for a second straight year but will be looking for a different result against Adelaide United following last year’s narrow loss to Melbourne City.
Here’s how Graham Arnold’s side booked their spot in the 2017 decider.
Round of 32: 8-0 over Darwin Rovers
In a one-sided affair, Brazilian striker Bobo netted four times as the Sky Blues thumped their part-time opponents.
Matt Simon, David Carney, Jordy Buijs and Milos Ninkovic also found the net at Darwin Football Stadium.
Round of 16: 3-0 over Bankstown Berries
David Carney netted after just five minutes to give Sydney FC an early advantage before a dogged Bankstown outfit worked their way into the contest and made it difficult for Graham Arnold’s side.
The Hyundai A-League outfit’s class shone through in the end with Bobo and Adrian Mierzejewski netting in the second half to secure a hard-fought win.
Quarter-Final: 2-0 over Melbourne City
In a rematch of last year’s FFA Cup final, this time it was Sydney FC that emerged victorious with a comfortable 2-0 win at Leichhardt Oval.
Sydney FC raced out of the blocks with Dutch defender Jordy Buijs netting a spectacular free-kick after just seven minutes before skipper Alex Brosque sealed the win with a classy chip in the second half.
Polish recruit Adrian Mierzejewski stole the show with a sublime performance on his starting debut for the Sky Blues, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd when substituted late in the game.
Semi-Final: 5-1 over South Melbourne
In a quick-fire opening, David Carney sprung the offside trap to score Sydney FC’s first inside five minutes before Bobo doubled their advantage after just 17 minutes.
South Melbourne pulled a goal back just after the break but further goals to Bobo, Sebastian Ryall and Matt Simon sealed a dominant win for the Sky Blues.
