Signing news: Fowler snares O'Donovan to lead Roar revolution
Irish striker Roy O’Donovan is set to lead the line in Robbie Fowler’s new-look Brisbane Roar side after penning a two-year deal today.
O’Donovan, 33, joins the three-time Hyundai A-League Champions after his exit from Newcastle Jets in May.
“I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to sign for Brisbane Roar. It’s an exciting time to be joining the club and the chance to work with Premier League legend Robbie Fowler was a big factor in my decision,” O’Donovan told Roar's official website.
“Brisbane is a big [Hyundai] A-League club and I’m looking forward to challenging the top teams next season and help to bring back the success that Brisbane have had in the past.
“I want to thank the Newcastle Jets and all of the fans there for their fantastic support and wish them all the best for next season,” O’Donovan said.
The Republic of Ireland youth international – who played 17 times in the Premier League for Sunderland in 2007/08 - has been one of the competition’s most prolific forwards after Central Coast Mariners lured him Down Under in 2015.
He scored 19 goals for the Mariners in his two seasons in Gosford, and found the back of the net 20 times in two campaigns for Newcastle following his signature for Ernie Merrick’s Jets in 2017.
“I’m very happy that we have secured Roy for the next two seasons. Getting a quality striker with a proven track record in the [Hyundai] A-League was a key position for us to fill,” Fowler said.
“I was impressed with what I’ve seen of Roy so far and genuinely feel that there is plenty more to come from him and look forward to his contribution as a goal scorer and an experienced member of the squad.”
O’Donovan will link up with his new teammates when Brisbane Roar pre-season training officially gets underway next week.
