Signing news: Former Bundesliga star Meier joins Western Sydney
Western Sydney Wanderers have swooped for a former star of the Bundesliga, Alexander Meier.
The 36-year-old German striker has signed for Markus Babbel's side for the upcoming Hyundai A-League 2019/20 Season, filling the club's second marquee player allocation and final VISA player position.
Meier scored 119 Bundesliga goals in a decorated career spanning 14 years with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he won the 2017/18 German Cup, and is colloquially known as Fussballgott (Football God).
He also won the 2014/15 Bundesliga Golden Boot with The Eagles, and spent last season with second tier outfit St. Pauli, where the began his career back in 2001.
“I’m very excited to play in Australia and I can’t wait to go on the plane tonight,” Meier told the club website.
“Markus told me how professional the club is and that they are very ambitious, and it is a great club to play for.
“I don’t like to speak about myself, about what I can deliver, all I can say that is I will always give 100% on-and-off the field.
“The most important thing for me is that as a team we all stand for each other, in bad and in good times, and the better the environment we create, success can come from this.”
Meier spent five seasons playing with Wanderers midfielder Pirmin Schwegler between 2009-14.
His signing was confirmed by Wanderers boss Babbel prior to his side's 3-0 FFA Cup 2019 Quarter Final defeat to Melbourne City on Wednesday night.
“It’s very important because he’s a really good striker with a lot of experience, a top professional and the special thing is he’s different to what we have," Babbel told FOX Sports.
“I was looking exactly for this type of player and I’m really happy that the waiting was for the right reasons."
Meier will arrive in Western Sydney on Sunday morning.
