Adelaide United promote young keeper Cox to Scholarship deal

Adelaide United have confirmed the signing of talented goalkeeper Ethan Cox on a three-year scholarship contract with the club.

The 16-year-old gloveman joined the Reds for the Foxtel Y-League 2019/20 Season and impressed the club's coaching staff throughout the campaign.

He left an excellent impression on goalkeeper coach Eugene Galekovic while also training alongside the likes of Hyundai A-League no.1 Paul Izzo and fellow goalkeepers Isaac Richards and Dakota Ochsenham.

“It’s a great feeling signing for Adelaide United,” Cox said on the Reds' official website.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to represent Adelaide United and I’m now one step closer to achieving that.

“I know I’m joining a very talented group of goalkeepers at Adelaide United and I’m looking forward to training with them day-to-day.

“To also be coached by Eugene is fantastic because he’s one of the best goalkeepers this club has ever had and he has some amazing experiences I can learn from.

“I still have a lot of work to do and can improve my game much more, so that’s my main focus moving forward.”

The signing of Cox on a scholarship contract continues the Reds' focus on promoting youth under Gertjan Verbeek.

Already this season we've seen the emergence of the likes of Louis D'Arrigo, Al Hassan Toure and Mohamed Toure to Adelaide's first team.

“Ethan has a lot of potential and we are delighted he has committed his future to Adelaide United,” Reds Director of Football Bruce Djite said.

“Signing him to a three-year deal shows the faith we have in his ability and we believe his development will only continue training in a very competitive environment under Eugene’s tutorage and alongside our other ‘keepers.

“This is just the beginning for Ethan and there is still a long way for him to go in his development.

“We’re confident that right here at Adelaide United, Ethan will be given every opportunity to fulfil his potential and we’re excited to see him develop in the coming years.

“Like with signing 15-year-old Mohamed Toure last week, we will have a plan in place and work with his family and school to ensure his football commitments complement his education.”
