Adelaide United defender Dylan McGowan says the remarkable surge in form of the Reds hasn’t surprised the playing which he says stuck to their guns during the club's win-less start to the season.
After a disastrous start to the season where the Reds struggled to adapt to new coach Gui Amor's game plan, Adelaide have now surged into second spot after a convincing 3-0 win over Brisbane Roar at Coopers Stadium on Saturday.
Adelaide make it 13 unbeaten with win over Roar
The Reds took the lead midway through the first stanza via the in-form Bruce Kamau before doubling their advantage five minutes into the second half through Bruce Djite.
Substitute Pablo Sanchez completed the rout with an easy finish to cap an impressive performance.
The Reds extraordinary run of 13 matches unbeaten now sees them as genuine title contenders to the likes of Western Sydney.
“It’s obviously important at this stage of the season, points are crucial. So to come away with three points against a very good Brisbane side is a credit to how far we’ve come this season,” McGowan told ABC radio.
“We can’t control what other teams do… we’re on a good run at the moment and we’ll need that to continue if we want to make the top two.”
McGowan added that while confidence is soaring, this winning run wasn’t a huge surprise to those in the playing group.
“When you look back at all the hard work we’ve put in, and when things weren’t going well we really stuck to our guns and doing what we’ve been doing all year.
“And to come away with 13 games undefeated is great, but it’s just credit to the hard work we’ve put in.”
Reds midfielder Stefan Mauk, a mid-season signing from Melbourne City added the style of play under Gui Amor was perfect for his style of football.
"It's a very fluent style of football. We try to keep the ball a bit more than we have in the last couple of weeks but even so, we've been very good defensively and this is the type of football I like to play so it's been easy."
