Analysis Newcastle Jets coach Gary Van Egmond will spend another week in the stands but this time he's got company - Joel Griffiths and Mark Milligan will serve the first week of their two-week suspensions against Adelaide United on Sunday.
The red cards handed out for Griffiths' clash with Wellington's Karl Dodd and Milligan's dangerous challenge have left a significant hole in what is an already frustrated and underperforming line-up.
Statistics suggest Griffiths is the biggest loss. He has scored five of Newcastle's 11 goals this season and in the last six games he's missed, the Jets have lost five times and recorded just one draw.
Adding to the pressure is their seventh placing on the ladder. The Jets are two games outside the four and realise every slip-up from this point will make a championship defence unlikely.
Adam Griffiths and Jade North will ensure the team fight hard but they'll need other players to step up if they are to upset the Reds.
Posting a winning score is their main problem. They need the likes of Jin-Hyung Song, James Holland and Jesper Hakansson to lift and hopefully the goals will come.
Meanwhile Adelaide United got its Hyundai A-League season back on track with a 2-0 victory over Sydney FC. The win saw it end a two-game losing streak and regain second spot on the ladder.
It wasn't a dominant performance but the hard-running effort of Scott Jamieson, the confident demeanour of Daniel Mullen, the opportunist goal from Travis Dodd and the team's first clean sheet in weeks would've pleased coach Aurelio Vidmar.
With the Asian Champions League behind them, the South Australian side has a new spring in its step and another week-long break between games should revitalise it even further.
The signing of Mullen for a further two years is a boost for the club but there have been other less positive distractions during the week that could impact on the team's performance.
Jason Spagnuolo, who has been included in the line-up to tackle the Jets, will leave the club at the end of the year because he feels he's not getting enough opportunities while midfielder Diego is disappointed he, and other senior players, haven't been offered new contracts yet.
When players are thinking about their own future there's a chance the side will suffer.
United beat the Newcastle Jets in October and will do it again if they are focussed on the game at hand.
