Former Western Sydney Wanderers boss Tony Popovic has enjoyed a winning start to life in Turkey with new club Karabükspor overnight.
Popovic – in charge for the first time – led his side to a hard-fought 1-0 win over fifth-placed Kayserispor in the Super Lig on Sunday (AEST).
Gabriel Torje netted the game’s decisive goal with less than 15 minutes remaining as Popovic’s side snapped a 4-game losing streak.
The win lifts Karabükspor to 13th in the 18-team league after 8 matches.
Popovic was a shock departure from the Wanderers on the eve of the new Hyundai A-League season following a hugely successful five seasons with the club.
The former Caltex Socceroos defender admitted at the time that the opportunity to coach in Europe was too good to refuse.
Hayden Foxe has acted as the club’s interim coach for the first two matches of the season while they search for a permanent replacement.
