A last-gasp penalty from Roy Krishna has helped Wellington Phoenix earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Sydney FC at Westpac Stadium on Saturday evening.
Sydney looked set to take all three points with marquee Filip Holosko netting a stunning solo strike in 84th minute to give the Sky Blues the advantage.
But a clumsy challenge from Jacques Faty on Tom Doyle inside the box gave the Phoenix the chance to equalise, with Krishna making no mistake from the spot.
0-1 (Filip Holosko 84’) – The Slovakian received the ball on the touchline before embarking on a mazy dribble inside leaving two Phoenix defenders in his wake. The winger moved the ball onto his left boot before curling the ball from the top of the box past the helpless Glen Moss.
1-1 (Roy Krishna 90’) – The Fijian stepped up to the spot after Faty’s indiscretion and he made no mistake, coolly dispatching past the wrong footed Vedran Janjetovic.
With scores locked at 0-0 just prior to half-time, Sydney FC were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area with young gun Brandon O’Neill handed the responsibility. The 21-year-old unleashed a fizzing effort which left Glen Moss stranded but ricocheted off the underside of the crossbar, with Phoenix able to clear the rebound.
Andrew Hoole was brought down inside the area by Manny Muscat in the 48th minute and the winger put his hand up to take the spot kick. But Phoenix keeper Glen Moss guessed the right way and pulled off an impressive save to keep the scores locked at 0-0.
Sydney FC will be disappointed to only come away with a point after dominating large periods of the contest at Westpac Stadium.
Graham Arnold will be pleased with the turnaround in form of marquee man Filip Holosko who has now netted in consecutive matches after a patchy start to the campaign.
The Phoenix will count themselves lucky to have escaped with a point after such a disappointing performance, especially at home.
Tom Doyle will miss Wellington’s next clash against Adelaide United through suspension, while Louis Fenton is also likely to be sidelined for a few weeks with an ankle complaint.
