Signing news: Retre to stay in Sky Blue until 2021/22

Sydney FC are aiming to futher future-proof their Hyundai A-League dominance by signing utility player Paulo Retre to a two-year extension.

Retre has started nine, and appeared each of the Champions’ 11 matches in 2019/20, which has seen Steve Corica’s side open up a nine-point lead at the top of the Hyundai A-League ladder.

Until the current campaign, the 26-year-old had made 22 starts for the Sky Blues across two seasons since joining from his hometown club Melbourne City.

Retre started 2019/20 filling in for Rhyan Grant at right-back, before moving to left-back to deputise for Michael Zullo. An injury to Brandon O’Neill has seen Retre play the last four matches in central midfield.

“This is an incredible environment in which to play football and wonderful club to play for,” Retre told

“I’m delighted to be staying for another two years after this season and looking forward to what we can continue to achieve.

“A lot is made of our club culture at Sydney FC but I really believe it is second to none.”

The Sky Blues have been resetting the bar in 2019/20, clocking up the best start to a season in Hyundai A-League history and setting a record-breaking nine-match home winning streak.

Retre follows Milos Ninkovic and Zullo in penning new deals on the blue side of the Harbour City, as well as head coach Corica, who praised Retre’s contributions to his record-smashing side.

“Paulo is absolutely integral to Sydney FC and the success we’ve had here over the last few years,” Corica said.

“He is precisely the sort of club first player and good person we want at Sydney FC and his contribution is immeasurable.

“This season he has been fantastic for us on the field and he fits into our club culture perfectly off it.

“I’m looking forward to working with him and helping him achieve future success with our club.”
