Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City: When they met this season

The Newcastle jets host Melbourne City on Friday night in a blockbuster do-or-die Hyundai A-League semi-final at McDonald Jones Stadium.

We look back at the previous clashes between these two sides this season.

Round 9: Newcastle Jets 1 - 2 Melbourne City

Manny Muscat was the unlikely hero for Melbourne City as they came from behind to beat Newcastle Jets 2-1 at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The full-back belted home a bouncing ball in the 86th minute to end his side’s four-match winless run.

Ernie Merrick’s men had seemed looked likely to claim another vital victory when Andrew Nabbout capped a dominant first half hour with his fifth goal of the season.

But Ross McCormack squared the ledger from the spot before half-time and City were rewarded for an improved second half with Muscat’s thumping winner.

Round 18: Melbourne City 2 - 2 Newcastle Jets

Ross McCormack was denied a fairy-tale farewell despite Melbourne City twice coming from behind to rescue an entertaining 2-2 draw.

In his last match for the club, the on-loan striker had a goal-bound attempt for a dramatic winner cleared off the line by a fast-retreating Steven Ugarkovic in stoppage time.

Nikolai Topor-Stanley put the Jets ahead in just the third minute, only for young star Daniel Arzani to equalise for City just before the break.

Jason Hoffman restored Newcastle's lead with 20 minutes left, but Dario Vidosic earned his side a share of the points with a late goal before Ugarkovic's goal-line heroics denied McCormack right at the death.

Round 25: Newcastle Jets 0 - 3 Melbourne City

Melbourne City made a massive statement ahead of the Finals Series with a convincing 3-0 victory at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Dario Vidosic's second-half brace added to Bruno Fornaroli's opener as Warren Joyce's men confidently reclaimed third spot from rivals Melbourne Victory.

It was the Jets' second straight loss during which they conceded eight goals.

It was also the first time they'd failed to score during their breakthrough 2017/18 Hyundai A-League campaign.
