Sydney FC’s new signing Filip Holosko says he’s undaunted by the marquee tag he’ll take into the new Hyundai A-League season.
The Slovakian international signed a two-year deal last month and joins a list of Sky Blue marquees that includes Dwight Yorke, Juninho, John Aloisi, Alessandro Del Piero and Marc Janko.
“I had a lot of pressure in Turkey — Besiktas is a big club and there is a lot of pressure from fans,” Holosko told news.com.au.
“I know the marquee is like a star and I’m following some of the biggest players, like Alessandro Del Piero and Dwight Yorke.
“I want to be successful for the team and when I can help the team, I’m happy.”
Holosko spent nearly ten years in Turkey, seven of those with Besiktas where he scored 42 goals in 144 appearances.
He has also made 58 appearances for his country – including two matches at the 2010 World Cup, where he came up against his new Sydney FC strike partner Shane Smeltz.
The 31-year-old revealed it was compatriot and former Sky Blue Karol Kisel that first alerted him to the A-League back in 2009.
“We have very good young players,” Holosko added when asked about the next generation of Sky Blues.
“When I came here everyone told me Australia is not good for football, but I’m very surprised about the young players.
“They are very good and they have everything, they just need to concentrate on their football and maybe they’ll go to Europe.”
Sydney FC kick-off their season at home to Melbourne City on Saturday 10 October.
