Central Coast Mariners and Socceroos stalwart Mile Sterjovski has announced his retirement from football.

The 34 year old will play out the Hyundai A-League season with the Mariners as the club try and secure a second consecutive championship.

A much loved personality, social media went into overdrive as fellow players and fans from all clubs sent their congratulations.

Sterjovski will leave the competition in style, having played in all seventeen matches this season, netting 3 goals, including a penalty in Sunday-s 2-1 loss to the Roar.

Capable of playing across the park, Sterjovksi made 41 appearances for the Socceroos between 2000 and 2010 and included two starts at the 2006 World Cup against Brazil and Croatia.

Sterjovski started his career in the NSL with Wollongong Wolves, before making a name for himself at Sydney United and Parramatta Power.

Like many of his generation, Sterjovski enjoyed a wonderful career overseas, with notable stints with Lille and FC Basel.

One of the first of the Socceroos golden generation to return to the A-League, Sterjovksi was adored by Perth Glory fans, who were treated to 63 wonderful matches from 2009 to 2012 which included 15 goals.
