Jon McKain appears set to leave Adelaide United, with the experienced defender seemingly unable to agree a new contract at the Coopers Stadium club.

Former club captain McKain was a key member of the team which reached the A-League finals in impressive style during Josep Gombau's first season in charge.

Along with playmaker Marcelo Carrusca, the 31-year-old was due to come out of contract at the end of the campaign, with the Reds' Spanish coach confirming in February offers had been made to both players.

And while Argentine Carrusca agreed a new deal later that month, there was no word on McKain's future until Thursday, when the 16-cap former Socceroo announced he would not be staying.

Adelaide, who re-signed central defender Nigel Boogard last month, have said the club were still keen to retain the services of the former skipper but salary cap constraints had made it very difficult.

“Jon has been a great servant of the club for the last three years and it would be great to have been able to agree to terms with him,” said Reds Football Director Michael Petrillo.

“Unfortunately in this league that can-t always happen for a variety of reasons and one being the salary cap conditions within which we operate.

"We kept negotiations open with Jon for a lengthy time but we weren-t able to close the gap between our expectations."
