Matchweek 10 preview: Newcastle Jets v Wellington Phoenix
Wellington Phoenix will be desperate to spark an uplift in form after slumping to the bottom of the A-League table, beginning with a win against Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday night.
The Phoenix have just one win on the board to date in the 2020/21 A-League season - earned against the league-leading Central Coast Mariners. Ufuk Talay's slide slumped below Melbourne Victory into 12th on the A-League table after a 2-0 loss to the former cellar dwellers in Matchweek 9.
There's nowhere to go but up for the Phoenix as they head toward a clash with Newcastle, but Craig Deans' resurgent side look well poised to stall Wellington's push for a revival.
The Jets snuck into the top six after their last fixture, going five games unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Victory on the road.
The first of five games on that streak was a 2-1 win over Wellington in Matchweek 5. After four successive losses to start the 2020/21 A-League campaign the three points earned over Wellington were Newcastle's first of the season. Deans' side have built on that points total in each of their games since.
Goals to Roy O'Donovan and Valentino Yuel in Newcastle's Matchweek 5 fixture helped stave off a late Phoenix charge sparked by an 85th-minute penalty scored by Ulises Dávila, which proved too little, too late for the Phoenix in their attempts to steal a point from the Jets.
