Matchday Saturday preview: A-League, May 1

An unmissable Sydney Derby highlights an A-League triple-header, as Sydney FC travel to Bankwest Stadium to face Western Sydney Wanderers in the last of three A-League fixtures taking place on Saturday, May 1.

The second Sydney Derby of the season pits the second-placed Sky Blues against the ninth-placed Wanderers. Western Sydney fell out of the top six in Matchweek 18 after losing 5-4 to Melbourne Victory to go six games without a win in the 2020/21 campaign.

Steve Corica's side can move back to within one point of table-topping Melbourne City with a win on Saturday night, but the Wanderers have held the recent Sydney Derby advantage, going unbeaten in the last five meetings (D3, W2) between the two teams.

Sydney FC will be eager to put that recent derby record to bed with a win on Saturday night - the club's first against the Wanderers since December, 2018.

The two Sydney sides will round out the action of Saturday's triple-header, which begins in the West when Perth Glory host Macarthur FC at HBF Park.

The Bulls eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Glory in Matchweek 15 - the first meeting between the teams in A-League history. Macarthur have failed to win any of four games since (D2,L2), leaving its position in the top six a precarious one.

Perth are on a similar winless run leading into Matchweek 19 (L3, D1). Richard Garcia's side last featured in Matchweek 17 when Wellington travelled to Perth to sew up a routine 3-1 victory.

Ten points separate these two teams on the table, however Perth have played three games less than their Saturday-afternoon opponents - a win at home would help Glory creep back towards the top half of the table.

Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix meet at Moreton Daily Stadium in between Macarthur's clash with Perth and the evening's Sydney Derby.

The matchup between two of the competition's form sides is guaranteed to cause fireworks, with the Roar (seventh) and Phoenix (eighth) eager to continue rising into Finals Series contention.

Wellington striker Ben Waine has netted in four consecutive games as his side have clinched three wins and a draw, while the Roar won its third game straight when travelling to Central Coast Stadium to beat the Mariners 4-0 in Matchweek 18.
