Newcastle Jets' Ecuadorian striker Edson Montano has described the happiness he felt scoring his first goal for the Club in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Melbourne City at AAMI Park.
Speaking through South-American teammate Marcos Flores after training on Tuesday morning, Montano told reporters that he was pleased to have opened his goal-scoring account early in the season.
“I felt a lot of emotion scoring my first goal for Newcastle,” Montano said.
“I’m enjoying the city, I feel good in this group of players and every day I’m feeling better and more comfortable in my surroundings.
“I’m starting to get stronger physically as well, so my confidence is growing with each match.”
Montano said he had found the level of play in the Hyundai A-League quite challenging to date.
“The level of football is really competitive and I find the league to be very physical as well,” Montano said.
“In the past two games we’ve lost a bit of focus in the last couple of minutes and unfortunately we’ve lost a couple of points because of that.
“It shows you that you have to always be focused for all 90 minutes in this competition.”
The Jets travel across the Tasman to face Wellington Phoenix on Sunday and Montano said he is looking forward to the challenge.
“The schedule is very difficult with the first four games away, but I’m excited to play in front of the home crowd,” Montano said.
“Every game when you play away it is tough, and Wellington won their last game against the Central Coast so we know it will be a difficult game, but we’ll be up there fighting for the three points.”
