The Newcastle Jets have produced their second win in a week with just 10 men scoring a comprehensive 2-0 win over Gold Coast United in front of an impressive Wednesday night crowd at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

More than 8000 fans watched as Newcastle dominated from the outset, peppering the Gold Coast goal in the first half but visiting goalkeeper Glen Moss made a number of crucial saves to keep his side in the match.

Newcastle's Ali Abbas went within a whisker of scoring just after half-time with a shot that crashed off the crossbar before he eventually broke the deadlock with a crisply taken left foot shot in the 77th minute.

The home side was reduced to 10 men just a minute later when inspirational skipper Ljubo Milicevic was sent off for his second yellow card offence.

But talismanic striker Sasho Petrovski wrapped up the win for the Jets when he slotted home in the 81st minute.

The win equals Newcastle best run of games without a loss and lifts them into fifth place on the Hyundai A-League ladder, just five points behind the Central Coast Mariners, while the Gold Coast remain in third.

Newcastle coach Branko Culina said he was pleased with Newcastle's third victory in 11 days.

''The key point for us was to be patient and play good football,'' he said. ''Credit to the players, they were superb.''

Meanwhile, Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg offered no excuses for the loss.

''Newcastle deserved to win and we deserved to lose, simple as that.''

The Jets went close to opening the scoring in the ninth minute when Ruben Zadkovich made a break down the right wing before crossing into Francis Jeffers at the near post, who scuffed a hurried shot.

The ball bobbled under Gold Coast keeper Glen Moss and Ali Abbas tried to poke in the loose ball but Moss was able to regather.

The Jets kept applying the pressure and went close on a number of occasions. Italian import Marcello Fiorentini fired narrowly over the bar before Englishman Jeffers had two golden chances to score.

The first saw him put through on a one-on-one with Moss but he fired his shot straight into the advancing keeper. The second saw him take the ball wide around Dino Djulbic and cut back on his left foot only to again shoot into Moss.

Fiorentini also fired in the arms of Moss as did Marko Jesic before the Gold Coast had their first shot on goal just two minutes before half-time when Bruce Djite unleashed a powerful low shot from outside the box that forced in-form Jets goalkeeper Matthew Nash into a fine diving save to see the teams locked 0-0 at half-time.

The Jets went within inches of breaking the deadlock just three minutes after the break when a Tarek Elrich flick-on header put Abbas into space. The Iraqi international took the ball to the edge of area before unleashing a left footed curling shot that beat Moss, only to crash into the underside of the crossbar and bounce on the goal-line and away from goal.

The Jets brought on impact striker Sasho Petrovski in the 68th minute and he wasted no time getting a shot on goal, but Moss was again able to reel it in.

Down the other end Djite chipped a curling shot from the edge of the area that Nash was forced to swat away. From the ensuing corner the ball came out to substitute Joel Porter but his shot ballooned over the bar.

The Jets eventually broke the in the 77th minute when Kasey Wehrman laid the ball off for Abbas who took the ball into the area and around Djulbic before slamming a vicious left foot drive into the back of the net.

Newcastle were dealt a blow just a minute later however when Milicevic was shown his second yellow card after bringing down Adam Traore, leaving the home side with just 10 players for the remaining 12 minutes of the match.

It didn't matter though as Petrovski sealed the victory with his fourth goal in as many matches. Moss could only parry away a Wehrman free kick from 25 metres and Petrovski was on hand to control the ball off his chest and then knee before threading a shot from an acute angle into the far corner with his right foot.
