‘It’s like coming home’ – Bobo has a familiar feeling back at Sydney FC

A-League goalscoring great Bobo has set his sights on lifting silverware once again after explaining ‘it’s a great feeling’ to return to Sydney FC.

The Brazilian goal machine netted 42 strikes in 57 matches across his two previous seasons as a marquee player in the Harbour City between 2016 and 2018.

In a glittering spell, Bobo fired Graham Arnold’s Sky Blues to back-to-back Premiers Plates, scored an extra-time winner in the 2017 FFA Cup Final, and lifted the Championship in 2017.

After spells in Turkey, India and his native Brazil, Bobo made a shock return to his former club on New Year's Day 2021 and the 36-year-old has been getting up to speed ahead of Saturday's Sydney Derby.

“I’m happy to be back, it’s like coming back home,” Bobo said,

“[It’s a] great feeling, good to see the boys, and the new ones here.

“I feel good, we tried to keep fit in the quarantine.

“We have got the trainer there, we tried to do the program sent to me so let’s see now what’s going to happen.”

Steve Corica’s defending Premiers and Champions made a winning start to the 2020/21 campaign, beating Wellington Phoenix 2-1 in Matchweek 1 in their their first match without proflifc striker Adam Le Fondre.

The Englishman replaced Bobo in 2018 and scored 39 goals in 57 games across two A-League seasons before switching to Indian Super League side Mumbai City in the off-season.

While Corica has heralded the emergence of young gun Trent Buhagiar, Bobo will aim to pick up where he left off on Aussie soil and help fill the void left by Le Fondre’s departure.

Bobo won the A-League Golden Boot in his last A-League season in 2017-18.
Bobo won the A-League Golden Boot in his last A-League campaign in 2017-18, recording the highest goal tally in a single season.

And the Brazilian marksman, who claimed the 2017-18 Golden Boot with 27 goals in 28 games, fully expects the A-League’s most successful club to maintain their golden streak.

“We try to get the third consecutive trophy for this club,” Bobo said.

“We need to do what they have done for the last four or five years.”

Bobo revealed he watched last season’s Grand Final triumph back in his home country and endeavoured to stay up-to-date with the club he would end up rejoining.

He added: “On Instagram and Facebook, people sent a lot of messages to me, which makes me happy.

“They never forget what we did in the past.”
