Hyundai A-League 2016 Finals Series schedule confirmed

The Hyundai A-League 2016 Finals Series, presented by FOXTEL, is set to provide an enthralling climax to a record breaking Hyundai A-League 2015/16 Season that came to a thrilling conclusion on the final weekend.

In one of the tightest and most unpredictable races for top spot in the competition’s history Adelaide United claimed the Hyundai A-League 2015/16 Premiers Plate and secured a place in the AFC Champions League 2017 competition.

Adelaide United took top spot after defeating Melbourne City FC 2-0 on Friday night in the first match of the final round of the Hyundai A-League 2016/16 season and then had to nervously wait for the result between Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar FC (0-0) before celebrating their title win.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chief Executive Officer David Gallop, paid tribute to Adelaide United for this historic achievement.

“To go from last place in Round 8 to winning the Premiers Plate in Round 27 is an amazing accomplishment in any competition,” said Gallop.

“Credit must go to the Head Coach Guillermo Amor for building a fantastic team on and off the field along with his players, coaching & medical staff and also to the Adelaide United Club Chairman, Greg Griffin, CEO Grant Mayer and his administrative team for their efforts contributing to this success.

“I know that I speak for many who are now looking forward to a fantastic Hyundai A-League 2016 Finals Series to see who will be crowned Champions,” concluded Gallop

This was Adelaide United’s second Premiers Plate having previously won the title in the inaugural season of the Hyundai A-League (2005/06).

Adelaide United and the Western Sydney Wanderers FC have now booked a week off after finishing first and second respectively.

With a record 421 goals scored this season, the most in the competition’s eleven seasons courtesy of some of the most prolific strikers in the history of the Hyundai A-League, the cut-throat Hyundai A-League 2016 Finals Series is not to be missed.

Melbourne City FC’s Uruguayan striker Bruno Fornaroli scored 23 goals, a record haul in a Hyundai A-League season, while Brisbane Roar FC marksman Jamie Maclaren’s 18 goals is a record for an Australian player.

The Elimination Finals (Week One) of the Hyundai A-League 2016 Finals Series, presented by FOXTEL, will see Brisbane Roar FC (3rd) host Melbourne Victory (6th) on Friday (15 April) and Melbourne City FC (4th) go head to head with Perth Glory (5th) on Sunday (17 April).
