“He can really help us move forward”: Clisby praises influence of new coach Stajcic

Central Coast Mariners fullback Jack Clisby says Alen Stajcic has made things look ‘positive’ around the club after taking over from the sacked Mike Mulvey.

Stajcic was announced as interim manager earlier in the week with the club sitting last on the Hyundai A-League ladder and reeling from an 8-2 mauling at the hands of Wellington Phoenix.

Speaking ahead of the F3 Derby against Newcastle Jets on Saturday night, Clisby said Stajcic had changed a lot around the training ground in a short space of time.

“Excited, obviously a lot has changed this week with the new gaffer in and things are looking very positive,” Clisby said.

“He’s come in and instilled what he wants in the short time he’s been here and we’ll try to apply that.”

Despite looking set for consecutive wooden spoons, Clisby said that last thing the team could do was turn on one another and should instead focus firmly on the future.

“It’s been a rocky season for us and people are going to turn and look to point fingers but as professionals we have to focus on ourselves and this happens in football,” he said.

“He [Stajcic] seemed very positive, obviously he’s got a great resume, he was with the Matildas for a while and did good things with them so we’re very happy to have him here and I think he can really help us move forward.

“The intensity in training this week has been great so that’s a good sign, He’s come in with plans of how he wants us to play and we’re looking forward to applying that tomorrow [Saturday] night.

“It is a new page, it’s a new system, a new way of playing and a new philosophy so we’re just going to do as best as we can and as quick as we can.”
