Melbourne City FC coach John van 't Schip has sought to shrug off the impact of David Villa's impending departure being leaked ahead of the Melbourne derby, but the Dutchman's frustration with the handling of the situation was plain for all to see.
Spanish star Villa will leave Australia for New York after Round 4 of the Hyundai A-League and his return date - if the World Cup winner does indeed come back - is unknown.
With a massive game against local rivals Melbourne Victory just a day away, Van 't Schip tried his best to turn attention back to on-field matters.
"Look, I can be disappointed about things, but it has no use," he said when asked about the PR own-goal.
"I'm focused on one thing and that's the game. All the other things, that's for the people in the office to talk about. They have to make those kind of decisions.
"The boys talked about the situation, we discussed it internally, so there's no surprises."
Pressed on whether or not it would have been better for the club to publicise Villa's pre-planned departure ahead of schedule, Van 't Schip appeared to indicate that pointed questions would indeed be asked of the club's administration by coaching staff, albeit behind the scenes.
"That's again, something that I should not be answering. I'm coach. Internally, of course, we have some of those discussions."
As for the prospect of Villa returning after helping his family to settle in the United States, Van 't Schip was unable to provide an update.
"I don't have anything to add, we're happy he's with us," he said.
"Two more games and then after that, we'll see what the clubs are going to decide for a second period."
When asked if the news had demoralised the team, the coach was unequivocal: "No."
It's now up to the City players to prove their coach right on that count when they take to the field at a packed Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
