Topor-Stanley rocket wins Goal of the Season at Dolan Warren Awards

Newcastle Jets defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley's long range thunderbolt against Perth Glory in Round 21 has been awarded the 2019/20 Goal of the Season at the Hyundai A-League's edition of the Dolan Warren Awards, held online on Thursday night.

The central defender doesn't score many goals for his club, but the left-foot dagger he dispatched into the top right corner from well outside the box against his former side Perth will live long in the memory.

A number of contenders went close to taking out the award, but the 35-year-old's wonder strike proved impossible to look past.

"I remember Steve Ugarkovic yelling shoot, but I’m pretty sure he was joking," Topor-Stanley said when recounting his memories of the strike.

"It sat up nicely, I remember it just flying off the boot, I didn’t really hit it that hard or with too much force it was just a clean strike.

"I saw Rocket [Liam Reddy] diving for it and I thought ‘don’t you dare, don’t you dare get a hand to that’, and he didn’t.

"I believe I produced something else for the internet in training not too long ago, it was put up by the club and it got some hits, so I’m capable.

"As soon as it left the boot I knew it was on target, and to beat a keeper of that calibre is always nice and also to get a win in that game."

Topor-Stanley runs to the Jets faithful, who could hardly believe their eyes after witnessing the Goal of the Season.
