City defender rues 'stupid' Melbourne Derby defeat

Melbourne City defender Michael Jakobsen slammed the "stupid" and "sloppy" late lapse that cost his side a point in the 1-0 loss to rivals Melbourne Victory.

City conceded a free-kick deep into stoppage time which Dean Bouzanis subsequently fumbled.

The goalkeeper, in an attempt to rescue the situation, compounded his error by fouling Mark Milligan in the area, enabling the Victory midfielder to score a last-gasp winner from the spot.

"It's very hard. It should have ended 0-0 and then we concede a penalty at the end that's stupid," Jakobsen told Fox Sports.

"It's sloppy again. We shouldn't have given it away."

Melbourne Derby
City struggled to find their feet during the first half.

City were outplayed during the opening 45 minutes and could have fallen behind when Leroy George hit the crossbar in the 28th minute.

However, Jakobsen felt they improved enough after half-time to merit a result.

"We came out in the second half with a better attitude," he said.

"We were playing stupidly in the first half, we did a lot of short passes and they were straight on us from the first whistle.

"We had to go a bit longer in the second half and that opened up the pitch a bit more so we had more time on the ball.

"It helped, but we didn't get a win."
