Adelaide United v Newcastle Jets: match preview
The respective ladder positions belies the recent form line as a resurgent Newcastle Jets head to an Adelaide United side in free-fall on Sunday.
The Jets (10th) may be three places and nine points behind Gertjan Verbeek’s men but haven’t tasted defeat since a narrow 2-1 loss to Wellington Phoenix on January 24.
That’s a run of five games unbeaten – two wins and one draw – either side of new coach Carl Robinson’s arrival.
With new signings Bernie Ibini and Joe Ledley having extra time to settle in after last weekend’s bye, there is growing optimism in the Hunter the Jets could make a late charge for the finals.
In contrast, the Reds are now looking up at the top six after their embarrassing 5-1 loss at home against Western United in Round 22.
That loss is the low point of a run of four defeats in five games and they need to stop the rot immediately if they want to keep in the Finals Series hunt.
A win over the Jets would be a good start but another loss and there will need to be some serious soul searching in the City of Churches.
