Sydney FC edge Melbourne Victory in hard fought Big Blue

An energetic Melbourne Victory couldn't quite deliver a dose of Grand Final redemption, losing 1-0 on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium against Sydney FC in the Big Blue.

A bizarre own goal early in the second half gave the Sky Blues the lead and they held on after a cagey, even contest.

STORY OF THE GAME

  • Victory pressed Sydney furiously in the opening 20 minutes and were clearly on top early before the Sky Blues started to click into gear with
  • Sydney started on the front foot in the second 45 and within minutes they had their lead as the momentum shifted their way.
  • Sydney FC with desperate defence to hold out as Victory pressed in time added on with a goal-saving block.
  • New Sydney FC signings Luke Wilkshire and Adrian Mierzejewski both impressed. Leroy George also looked  to have some promise for the Victory.

GOAL

Thomas Deng (OG), Sydney FC 52’: 0-1

Luke Wilkshire burst down the left after some clever inter-play and his superb cross found Alex Brosque. He scuffed his header with the ball falling to Deng but he played the ball into his own net.
