Newcastle Jets have reclaimed a spot in the Hyundai A-League’s top six after stunning Brisbane Roar 3-2 at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
A late goal from Morten Nordstrand proved to be the winner after Jamie Maclaren looked to have earned his side a share of the spoils from the penalty spot.
In a weekend that had already featured some sublime strikes Tommy Oar and Andrew Hoole added two more to the highlights reel in the opening stanza.
Roar’s Socceroo winger lashed home a volley from the top of the box on the quarter hour mark – his first since his return to the club – to open the scoring.
Not to be outdone Hoole got the visitors back in the match on the cusp of half-time with a cracking strike from distance – his second in three weeks.
Jets midfielder Wayne Brown departed the contest at the break to dash to hospital after his wife went in labour, with Chinese import Ma Leilei entering the fray.
A strong header from Andrew Nabbout gave Newcastle the lead midway through the second-half, with Maclaren and Nordstrand trading goals to round out a five goal thriller.
The result sees Newcastle move back up to sixth on the table, while John Aloisi's side remain fourth following back-to-back losses.
1-0 Brisbane Roar: Tommy Oar, 15’
A poor defensive clearance from Nick Cowburn saw the ball land at the feet of Oar at the top of the box, who took a touch before stroking home a sweetly hit volley.
1-1 Newcastle Jets: Andrew Hoole, 45+1’
With half-time beckoning the Jets winger went on a weaving run before pulling the trigger from the edge of the box, sending the ball rifling into the back of the net.
1-2 Newcastle Jets: Andrew Nabbout, 72’
Jets defender Jason Hoffman took advantage of a fortuitous rebound, darting down the right wing before firing in a cross which Nabbout headed home at the back post.
2-2 Brisbane Roar: Jamie Maclaren pen; 82’
Jack Hingert found himself free in the box before being brought down by a sliding challenge from Nigel Boogaard. Maclaren stepped up to the spot, sending Jack Duncan the wrong way to level the scores.
2-3 Newcastle Jets: Morten Nordstrand; 84’
The Danish striker challenged Michael Theo for the ball in an aerial dual with the Roar goalkeeper fumbling the ball allowing Nordstrand to stroke it home.
- Andrew Hoole’s goal in first half stoppage time was the Jets’ first shot on target for the match.
- The result end’s Brisbane Roar’s 13-match unbeaten run at Suncorp Stadium.
