Muscat: It's payback time
Tuesday, 22 April 2008
Melbourne Victory skipper Kevin Muscat admits revenge is on the Hyundai A-League team's mind ahead of Wednesday's must-win Asian Champions League encounter against Gamba Osaka in Japan.
The Victory are in a position where they must win this match and hope the J-League team drop points in either or both of its remaining group matches. Muscat admits it's a tough ask, but believes there is plenty of motivation within the squad to get the job done.
"The boys were really hurting after our loss against Gamba a couple of weeks ago and this is our chance to make amends and get one back," Muscat said.
"I'm confident we'll play well in Osaka and hopefully we can bring home three points and give ourselves a chance of finishing on top."
The Victory took three points from their opening match of Group G against Chunnam Dragons but have since lost to Chonburi and Osaka. With Gamba Osaka on seven points and only the top team to go through to the quarter finals, Melbourne needs to climb quite a mountain.
"There's no doubt this is a massive challenge for us," Muscat said. "Gamba is a good side with a host of quality players, but our boys are fired up and will give it everything on Wednesday."
Osaka has suffered a minor setback heading into this game, having lost goalkeepers Yosuke Fujigaya and Naoki Matsuyo, with Atsushi Kimura to step in for this match. Osaka has drawn both its J-League matches since the dramatic 4-3 win over Melbourne a fortnight ago.
